PARTICIPATION IN THE WORLD BOXING SUPER SERIES TOURNAMENT
On September 9, 2017 in Berlin, at the Max-Schmeling-Halle arena, the quarterfinal match of the World Boxing Super Series was held, in which Oleksandr Usyk met ex-world champion, a Bosnian-German German Marko Hook (40-4-1).
From the first rounds, Usyk seized the initiative and controlled the course of the battle, regularly disturbing Marco Hook with weak twos. Oleksandr Usyk was noticeably faster and more technical than his opponent, winning round after round. The German boxer had no choice but to box and clinch dirty, but Usyk was ready for this, closed his head during the clinches, and the referee, who repeatedly warned Hook, once took a point from him for hitting the back of Oleksandr Usyk slipped head. 8th round.
In the last rounds, Oleksandr Usyk advantage was undeniable, and it all ended in the tenth round, when, after a lengthy attack by Usyk, during which Hook stood at the ropes and took blows, the referee stopped the fight. The result – the victory of Oleksandr Usyk by technical knockout in the 10th round. Oleksandr defended the WBO world champion belt and advanced to the semifinals of the super series.
COMBINING BATTLE WITH MIRIS BRIEDIS
On January 27, 2018, at Arena Riga, a fight took place as part of the semifinal of the Boxing Super Series (WBSS). Two champion belts were at stake: Usbo WBO World, and Briedis WBC World.
In the first rounds, Usyk showed boxing tricks and homework. In the first three rounds, Usyk forced his rival to wipe out pretty and deplete his strength. After that, Oleksandr Usyk occupied the center of the ring, trying to keep his opponent at a distance, inflicting light but quick and accurate punches. The fifth round was marked by the bashing of Briedis: Usyk perfectly manifested itself in the middle distance, throwing a lot of accurate shots.
In the sixth round, Oleksandr shook his opponent with a straight left, but Briedis stayed on his feet. In the tenth round, the rivals staged a real “hack”, starting to exchange. Championship rounds have become incredibly tense. In the end of the 11th round, the Latvian missed a straight left, after which blood appeared on his face. The battle lasted all 12 rounds, after which the decision of the majority of judges Oleksandr Usyk won – 114: 114, 115: 113, 115: 113.
In this fight, Usyk combined WBO World and WBC World championship belts, and also reached the final of the World Boxing Super Series.
EXTREME DUEL: FIGHT FOR THE TITLE OF AN ABSOLUTE WORLD CHAMPION WITH MURAT GASSIEVIM
In July, the final match of the tournament between Oleksandr Usyk and Gassiev was held. In this final match, Oleksandr became the undisputed first heavyweight champion of the world according to IBF World, WBA Super World, WBC World, WBO World and The Ring vacant titles, linear champion, TBRB champion, and won the exclusive Mohammed Ali Cup and prize in the amount of 10 million dollars.
From the very beginning of the fight, Oleksandr worked a lot with a jab, constantly moving away from the opponent’s attacks. Gassiev leisurely pursued Oleksandr and tried to hit the body. Murat managed to hook Usik’s head with a sharp bang on the right in the end of the fourth round. However, the tactics of one strike did not work, and Usyk, in fact, declassified Gassieva, not allowing a single combination to be played in the entire battle.
